Location and Surroundings
The South of Mauritius offers a wild and rough coastline where untamed waves roll in to break on the rugged cliffs of Gris Gris, where the crying rock – la Roche qui Pleure – sheds innumerable tears from the impact of the Ocean. Right beside this nature site, the city of Souillac, is well known for its historic church and graveyard as well as ancient train depot which have nowadays been transformed into restaurant Le Batelage.
In Riviere des Anguilles, crocodiles can be seen reclining before put into steaks or transformed into chic handbags. A collection of insects is well worth seeing, but one of the parks main attractions are doubtless the most ancient island dwellers in their wonderful turtle area where one feels transformed right back into long bygone times when no man’s feet had ever touched the islands virgin shores. The Domaine de Saint Aubin invites to visit not so long bygone times of colonial splendour and offers great rum tasting, a stroll through their garden and a glimpse into the cultivation of vanilla and colourful anthurium flowers, all of which can be acquired directly on the premises. Finally the 20 Coloured Earth at Chamounix and the park that surrounds it make for a wonderful nature experience of cascading waters, lush tropical vegetation and stunning views.
Weather Conditions
With the breeze coming blowing in from the South Pole, it is wise to bring along long sleeved pullovers or cardigans for nights at the Shanti Ananda. On the other hand, the wind has a very refreshing quality during hot summer days. The weather creates dramatic effects of clouds, sun and rain in this part of the island.
